Why you shouldn’t install a water heater yourself

Aussies love a good DIY project. Whether it’s painting the spare room, assembling flat-pack furniture or building a deck out back, there’s a sense of pride in doing things yourself. But there’s a clear line between what’s safe to tackle on your own and what should be left to the professionals—and water heater installation is definitely on the “leave it to the pros” list.

It might seem tempting to install a water heater yourself to save a few bucks but the risks far outweigh the savings. Here’s why taking the DIY route with your hot water system isn’t just risky—it could be downright dangerous, not to mention illegal in many cases.

1. It’s illegal without a licence

Let’s get this out of the way first: in Australia, installing a water heater is plumbing work. So it has to be done by a licensed plumber — and in many cases a plumber who’s also licensed in gas fitting if your unit is gas powered.

Under state and territory laws, doing unlicensed plumbing work can result in big fines. For example in NSW the penalties for unlicensed work can be over $20,000. In Vic and Qld you can even void your home insurance if unlicensed work causes damage.

Licensed plumbers and gasfitters know how to install systems to Australian Standards and codes. A DIY job breaks the law and skips all the compliance measures.

2. Risk of serious injury or death

Hot water systems — especially gas or electric storage heaters—can be deadly if not done correctly. There’s the obvious risk of burns from hot water or steam but that’s just the start.

Hot water plumbers from Metropolitan points out that incorrect installation of electric units can cause electrical faults, short circuits or electrocution. And with gas heaters the risk of a gas leak or carbon monoxide poisoning is very real.

Worst case scenarios do happen. There have been real cases in Australia where incorrect installation has caused explosions, fires or fatalities. These aren’t just freak accidents—they’re direct results of inexperienced handling.

3. You’ll damage your property

A poorly installed water heater can leak, overflow or not heat at all. Even something as simple as installing the temperature pressure relief valve incorrectly can cause flooding or water damage over time.

Water damage can add up to thousands of dollars in repairs—ruined flooring, damaged walls, mould and structural issues. You may not even notice a problem straight away but by the time signs appear it may be too late.

Worst of all if the work wasn’t done by a licensed professional your insurance company may not cover the damage. That’s a very expensive lesson to learn.

4. Compliance certificates matter

After a professional water heater installation, the licensed plumber or gasfitter provides a certificate of compliance. This certificate proves the installation meets Australian safety and quality standards and is an important document for insurance, resale and peace of mind.

If you’re selling your home, buyers and conveyancers will want to know all plumbing installations are compliant. A missing compliance certificate will cause headaches or delays during the sale process.

You can’t issue this certificate if you’ve done the installation yourself—because you’re not allowed to.

5. Wrong sizing or poor placement can cost you

Installing the wrong size water heater is a common mistake in DIY installations. If your unit is too small you’ll run out of hot water all the time. If it’s too big you’ll waste energy heating more water than you need.

Similarly, placing the heater in the wrong location can reduce its efficiency, increase heat loss or make future servicing harder. Professional installers assess your household’s hot water needs, layout and energy preferences before making a recommendation.

Choosing the right type, size and location of your water heater is about more than convenience—it affects your energy bills and comfort for years to come.

6. Energy efficiency and warranty issues

Improper installation can affect the energy efficiency of your system. A professionally installed unit will perform at its best, saving you money in the long run. But if seals are loose, pipes aren’t insulated, or valves aren’t working as they should, you’ll use more energy just to maintain your water at the desired temperature.

On top of that, most manufacturers’ warranties require professional installation. If your unit breaks down and you can’t provide proof of compliant installation, the manufacturer may not honour the warranty — even if the fault had nothing to do with how it was installed.

So while you may save a few hundred dollars upfront, you could lose thousands in warranty claims later on.

7. Council approval may be required

Some water heater installations—especially when switching from electric to gas or changing the system type — require council notification or approval. Professionals know the process and can submit the paperwork for you.

Skip this step in a DIY job and you could be fined or have to undo the work. In some cases the council may require a full inspection which could end up costing more than hiring a professional in the first place.

8. Ongoing maintenance gets more complicated

When you hire a qualified plumber or gasfitter they keep records of the installation. That means when it comes time for servicing or replacement they already know the system and its history.

Do it yourself and there’s no record and future plumbers will have to guess what was done which can complicate repairs and cost more.

Plus some common maintenance tasks—like checking the sacrificial anode or replacing the tempering valve — are a lot easier when the unit was installed correctly in the first place.

Leave It to the Experts: Why Professional Installation Is the Smart Choice

DIY is great for many home improvement projects but water heater installation isn’t one of them. In Australia it’s not only illegal without the proper licence but also risky to your health, your property and your wallet.

Hiring a licensed plumber or gasfitter means your hot water system is installed safely, efficiently and in line with all local regulations. You’ll get a compliance certificate, maintain your warranty and have peace of mind knowing your household’s hot water is in good hands.

So before you pick up the wrench and YouTube tutorials think twice. This is one job that’s truly best left to the pros.
