28-year-old man charged with rape after Westfield Belconnen incident

A 28-year-old man from Phillip will face the ACT Magistrates Court today after being charged with one count of engaging in sexual intercourse without consent following an incident inย a retail store at Westfield Belconnen earlier this month.ย ย

Police allege about 5pm on Thursday 3 November, the man, who was an employee of the store, closed the storeโ€™s security shutters and began taking photographs of a woman in the store while she was out of view of the public.ย ย

The man is alleged to have encouraged the woman to enter a small office at the rear of the store, and then engaged in sexual intercourse with her, without her consent.

The woman attended hospital after the incident and underwent a forensic medical examination, later reporting the matter to police.

On 25 November, police executed a search warrant at the store and arrested the man.ย

Police urge any victims of sexual assault to report these criminal activities.

If you or someone you know has been affected by sexual violence, you can report to police by attending a police station or calling 131 444, or speak to theย Canberra Rape Crisis Centreย on 02 6287 3618.ย

You can also submit an online report for historical sexual assault for incidents that occurred more than six months ago.
