First place Fashions on the Field

After two years of being limited to online participation, Myer Fashions on the Field returned to Flemington for the 2022 Melbourne Cup. Everyday mums, teens, and frontline workers transformed into their most fashionable selves and strutted their stuff down the runway.

Young Vassi Minalopoulos poses with her fellow finalists in the Alpha Edit Competition, for stylish teens aged 14-18. Vassi won first place for her impeccable, equestrian-dotted set, which she handmade from vintage fabric purchased by her grandmother in the ‘70s.

Bernadette May was crowned Best Dressed for this stunningly maximalist outfit, featuring a floral dress by Bambah and hat by Peacock Millinery. The mum-of-four said this was a far departure from her usual flannel shirt and active wear.

Sherlon Garbo, a nurse from the Northern Territory, made history when he won Best Suited in a skirt of his own creation. The 31-year-old was inspired by Harry Styles and Brad Pitt, who have both donned skirts on the red carpet.

The popular Family Competition was won by Jenny Beard and her three grandchildren, Nellie, George, and Alby. The family snagged the gong in shades of lavender – 2022’s hero colour.

This year, the Women’s and Men’s Racewear competitions transformed to become the Best Dressed and Best Suited Awards, with all genders encouraged to choose either category based on their personal style. Fashions on the Field judge Christian Wilkins led by example, turning heads in a corset, sheer gloves, and a show-stopping headpiece.
