What’s on in Canberra this Leap Day, 29 February

2024 is a Leap Year, which means we have 24 extra hours this year! How are you going to spend Leap Day on Thursday 29 February? Maybe, you’ll use it to rest, do nothing, have some quality time with loved ones, or some ‘me time’. And while many of us will be working and/or studying, as per usual, we’ve pulled together some ideas for what you can do if you have a spare moment and want to hit the town.

From opening night of a local musical theatre production or a music trivia night to catching Australian music legend Deborah Conway on stage, there are plenty of things to do in Canberra on 29 February.

Bring It On: The Musical

Opening night ofCanberra Philharmonic Society’s (aka Philo) upcoming production is on Thursday 29 February 8pm at Erindale College Theatre. Rival high schools battle it out at the national cheerleading championships in this musical loosely based on the 2000 film of the same name and featuring music by Tom Kitt and Lin-Manuel Miranda. The season continues to 16 March.

Her brilliant career

Learn about Eleanor Witcombe, the award-winning dramatist and trailblazing scriptwriter for theatre, radio and television, from research Fellow Dr Eleanor Hogan, at National Library of Australia, Thursday 29 February 12.30pm.

Artsound FM trivia night

Leap into the year with Artsound FM’s night of music trivia from the 1950s to the 1990s! Thursday 29 February is the date for master mic-blaster Brian Leonard and his 50-year quiz at Eastlake Football Club in Kingston. Quizzing begins at 7pm. Friends of ANBG Thursday Talks

On 29 February 12.30pm, ANBG Thursday Talks topic is ‘Art in the Bark: The Indigenous carved boab trees of northwest Australia’ by Professor Sue O’Connor of the ANU College of Asia Pacific. At Australian National Botanic Gardens Theatrette opposite Visitor Centre.

Songs from the Book of Life

Deborah Conway and Willy Zygier invite you on a wonderful musical journey through their four decades of music-making in Songs from the Book of Life, at Canberra Theatre Centre, 29 February 8pm. It’s described as “a bold tour-de-force told with unflinching honesty, humour, revelation, and a reflexive desire to let it all hang out”.
