To the editor: Tenants’ behaviour destroys ACT rental market

I invite your prestigious magazine and section who is in charge of researching and writing about the ‘Rental Housing Market Crisis in Canberra’ to get a first-hand experience by coming to this property to see how the tenants’ behaviour destroys the rental supply in Canberra.

I request you to publish the story and most importantly the photos of the condition of a five-bedroom house leased out almost in a new condition when the lease signed which provided inaccurate  false information, and how the renters who included both parents, a  Government employee and a tradesperson, who were ‘feeding and identified as children’ by the parents, with all the Government allowances at the property not even allowing the property manager to access the property for any reason.

The best part is the ‘Lame Duck’ style Tribunal [ACAT] closes their eyes by aiding and abetting to destroy the rental market.

In this particular case, The Tribunal has given orders to clear the garden and ordered that the tenants pay the cleaning costs. As the landlord, the landlord has to go to the Magistrates Court with the help of a lawyer to claim these costs of cleaning inside the house where the tenants’ family combined income was over $15,000 per month.

I invite the reporters from Canberra Daily to publish the story and the photos as this would be an extraordinary story to show how the tenants do not care or give a hoot about the Tribunal Orders.

The ACT Government needs to understand the return on investment is the main principle of economic recovery specifically for future property. The Attorney-General, who is currently planning to remove the no cause restriction from the Tenancy Act, and the Housing Minister both in the ACT government need to see this story to understand why the free fall, sharp deterioration of the rental market is taking place in Canberra. Unless the Tenancy Union, Tenancy Act and other so called sympathisers who focus on these horrible renters need to focus on how to impose severe penalties for not complying with the Tribunal Orders or the Tenancy Act legislation. I hope by publishing the photos and the condition of the house after complying with the Tribunal Order would at least open these so-called sympathisers to concentrate and see what a lot of hardships the landlords who provide these properties to these tenants. It has to be clearly said that not all the tenants are in the same category but these so-called renters who are rorting the system who do not abide by any law – whether it is the Tenancy Act or Crimes Act – know exactly how to abuse the loopholes.

There are clear signs that the ACT Government’s so-called sympathetic tenants policy will completely destroy the rental market and the Labor-Green Government can take the credit for the destruction of the Canberra rental market.
