GWS fall at final hurdle
The GWS Giants struggled in their maiden AFL Grand Final appearance at the MCG on Saturday 28 September, falling by 89 points to a red hot Richmond. The Tigers ran out winners 17.12 (114) to 3.7 (25).
NRC supporting Rural Aid
Rugby Australia and Rural Aid have partnered to create Rural Aid Round, which will be held this weekend of the National Rugby Championship. Rugby Australia will match dollar-for-dollar the money collected at the grounds, and kick-started the fundraising with a $5,000 donation. The Vikings host Sydney at Viking Park, Wanniassa on Saturday 5 October, kick-off 12pm. The side is coming off a 41-28 victory over Fijian Drua on 28 September.
Jersey Flegg Cup
The Canberra Raiders were narrowly beaten to the Jersey Flegg Cup at Bankwest Stadium in Western Sydney, going down to the South Sydney Rabbitohs 16-14 in the grand final on Sunday 29 September.
Hockey One comp begins
Round one of the inaugural Hockey One season was held on Sunday 29 September at the National Hockey Centre Lyneham with the Canberra Chill hosting the Brisbane Blaze. The women’s team tasted success winning 3-2 while the men’s side fell 4-1. The Canberra Chill host the NSW Pride on Saturday 5 October with the women playing at 2pm and the men at 3.30pm. Veterans charity rugby match
The ACT Veterans Rugby Club is playing its annual charity fund raising match against crew members of the HMAS Canberra III on Thursday 3 October 6.30pm at Kapyong Oval, Royal Military College, Duntroon. This year, the ACT Vets will support both the Heart Foundation and the Canberra Hospital Foundation.
Bronze for UC
The University of Canberra took out the bronze medal final in the second leg of the 2019 Aon University Sevens Series after defeating the University of Sydney 12-10. The result saw the side place for the first time in the competition’s three-year history.
Senior sports carnival
YMCA Canberra hosted the 16th Annual Senior Sports Carnival on Friday 27 September at the Australian National University. The event consists of modified ‘sporting events’ and aims to promote the health and wellbeing of Canberra’s oldest citizens – those who reside in age care facilities or attend age day care programs, typically around 80-100 years of age.
United re-sign Roestbakken
With a national team debut now under her belt, local player Karly Roestbakken will #GoGreen for the 2019/20 Westfield W-League season and return to Canberra United.
Socceroos action
Tickets are on sale for the Socceroos versus Nepal clash at GIO Stadium Canberra on Thursday 10 October, kick-off 8pm. The match forms part of Australia’s qualification journey to the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022. Tickets available from Ticketek.
Bates crowned champ
Canberra rally driver Harry Bates has claimed the 2019 CAMS Australian Rally Championship title honours with co-driver John McCarthy following a strong performance at the Adelaide Hills Rally in South Australia.While the outright championship has been wrapped up, the battle continues for runner-up honours with Molly Taylor and Lewis Bates set to do battle at the season finale on 15-17 November.
All-abilities netball
Netball ACT has announced their 2019 One Netball Marie Little Shield Team. A first for Netball ACT, the 2019 team will be the inaugural all-abilities representative team for the member organisation and a significant move forward in delivering a broader all-abilities netball program. The team will compete at the One Netball Marie Little Shield at the Brisbane Netball Centre on 12-14 October.
National Police Football Championships
The NSW Blue Heelers will host the National Police Football Championships onn 13-18 October at Alan Ray Oval, Ainslie in conjunction with AFL Canberra and Ainslie Football Club. The championships start on Sunday 13 October with the first ever women’s match in the Australian Police Football Association for the Lillian Armfield Cup. Matches will be played on 14 and 16 October before a day of finals on 18 October.
All weather beach volleyball
The Australian Institute of Sport (AIS), in partnership with Volleyball Australia and Sport Australia has launched an all-weather beach volleyball training facility to identify future Olympic gold medallists. The AIS has redesigned an existing multi-purpose training venue on site in Canberra to house two new indoor beach volleyball courts next to the existing indoor nets. More than 550 cubic metres of sand was sourced from a quarry in Newcastle to fit-out the new courts after a several month search for the perfect sample to meet international volleyball standards.
New Netball ACT CEO: David Marjoribanks is the new Chief Executive Officer of Netball ACT, effective Monday 30 September. Mr Marjoribanks joins the organisation with over 25 years’ experience in executive and general management roles, within the insurance and finance sector.
Nagas to coach Woden: The Woden Valley Rams have announced Ken Nagas as head coach for the 2020 season. The 1994 NRL Premiership winner with the Canberra Raiders replaces Lincoln Withers, who was unable to commit to coaching next season due to work and family commitments. Nagas was an assistant to Withers throughout the year and has previously had experience as an assistant for the Canberra Raiders U20’s side.
Community netball awards: Jonathan Toze of Tuggeranong District Association was names the ACT winner in the 2019 Australia Post One Netball Community Awards. Mr Toze was nominated for his commitment to developing and implementing a pathway for all-abilities players within the traditional structure of netball. An advocate for inclusion within the sport, he has successfully incorporated an all-abilities program at the Tuggeranong netball centre with weekly games and skill development.
Summer of tennis: Record prizemoney will be on offer in Canberra with a new look tennis events calendar being unveiled for the capital in 2020. The Apis Canberra International, will take place from 6-12 January 2020with a men’s ATP Challenger 125 and women’s USD$25,000 ITF World Tennis Tour event, while in March the ACT Claycourt International has received a huge elevation in prizemoney and ranking points with back-to-back USD$60,000 ITF World Tennis Tour women’s events.
Two-day race carnival: The Canberra Racing Club is introducing a two-day carnival from 2020 over the Canberra Day long weekend in March. The carnival will feature Black Opal Stakes Day on Sunday 8 March followed by Canberra Cup Day on the Canberra Day public holiday, Monday 9 March.Body positive: Gymnastics Australia has announced its new Body Positive Guidelines. Aiming to set clear boundaries and guidelines on acceptable language and behaviour in relation to body image, the recommendations throughout the guidelines provide information for coaches, parents, judges, support staff and administrative staff when working with gymnasts of all ages, genders and training levels. The guidelines are an important tool to facilitate the creation of positive, inclusive and respectful environments for all gymnasts.
