UC Capitals sign Tupaea, Smart
The UC Capitals are fast filling their roster for the Women’s National Basketball League (WNBL) 2020-21 season with the latest additions being 23-year-old Point Guard, Tahlia Tupaea, and 34-year old Guard, Brittany Smart, who both come across from the Sydney Flames.
Tupaea has played for the Flames since first debuting in the WNBL at the age of 15 and has been a prominent member of the Australian junior program, representing the Gems for a three-year period, and was also drafted in the WNBA in 2017.
Smart, who was born in Ohio, USA but is now a permanent resident of Australia, comes to the Capital after two seasons with the Flames.
Fast tracked facility upgrades
Amaroo District Playing Fields, Wanniassa District Playing Fields, and Deakin District Playing Fields are all receiving upgrades to bring the changerooms into line with the ACT Government’s Female Friendly Change Rooms @ Sporting Facilities guidelines.
The upgrades mean that the facilities now provide a welcoming space for all athletes and include lockable shower cubicles; power points for accessories adjacent to wet areas; individual toilet cubicles; privacy considerations; and shelving in appropriate locations for personal accessories.
The work is being undertaken as part of the ACT Government’s fast track infrastructure program. This $200,000 fast track project has so far engaged nine contractors across the three pavilions.
These latest upgrades join a long list of infrastructure and maintenance works already announced as part of the Fast Track program. All works are scheduled for completion by the end of June 2020.

No Easts for Premier Rugby comp
Easts Rugby Club has withdrawn from Premier Rugby for the 2020 season opting to participate in the First Division competition.
ACT & SNSW Rugby Union officials were advised by Easts Rugby Club that following communication with their playing group it became clear that they would not be in a position to field a Premier First Grade team for 2020.
Easts will compete in ACT Rugby’s First Division against clubs from across the Monaro region and the lower grades of the six remaining Premier grade clubs this season. Brumbies Rugby Deputy CEO and General Manager Community Rugby, Craig Leseberg, said: ‘’Easts are a foundation club with a rich and proud history. It’s important that we remain flexible and adaptable to support their needs during this challenging time.”
The ACT & SNSW Rugby Union remains committed to ensuring that Easts remains viable and competitive into the future.
