Evoenergy seeks apprentices for 2025

Ever considered an apprenticeship in the electricity industry? Evoenergy, the electricity distributor for more than 200,000 connections in the ACT, is seeking fresh tradespeople to help electrify the bush capital.

Applications are now open for Evoenergy’s 2025 apprenticeship program, and they are looking forward to welcoming a new cohort of apprentices in the new year. This year, they would love to see more women and First Nations people apply.

Evoenergy owns, maintains, and operates the electricity distribution network in the ACT, and employs more than 300 local people here in Canberra.

“Our focus with this recruitment round is to find a diverse group of people who are looking to start their career in the energy industry,” a spokesperson said.

“While you don’t need to be an electrical expert, we are looking for people who have an eagerness to listen and learn.

“Working in the energy industry can be a career for life, and there are opportunities to cross-skill and grow into different career pathways such as construction, project management, design or leadership.”

The apprenticeships available include Electrical Fitters, Lineworkers and Cable Jointers.

An Electrical Fitter apprentice would:

  • Perform substation maintenance.
  • Build substations to support new infrastructure around Canberra.
  • Connect new customers with power.
  • Re-connect power to existing customers.
  • Study a Certificate III in Electrotechnology

A Lineworker apprentice would:

  • Install or relocate power poles and wires.
  • Maintain Evoenergy’s existing overhead network.
  • Assist customers in the connection/disconnection of overhead services.
  • Investigate & repair overhead faults to restore supply when a power outage occurs.
  • Study a Certificate III in ESI – Distribution Overhead

A Cable Jointer apprentice would:

  • Install low voltage and high voltage underground cables.
  • Install and maintain pits, pillars, substations, and other electrical equipment.
  • Identify damage and perform required repairs to underground power cables.
  • Perform routine maintenance to underground power cables.
  • Study a Certificate III in ESI – Distribution Underground

Apprentices will complete practical field placements while studying, enabling them to gain hands-on experience while learning from highly skilled, experienced tradespeople.

Apprenticeship looks different day-to-day, and applicants would have to consider some of the requirements of the job. They could be asked to:

  • Work from heights as they learn to install, repair and maintain overhead electrical equipment.
  • Work at ground level or in trenches as they learn to install, repair and maintain underground cabling infrastructure.
  • Construct and work inside small spaces and substations – diagnosing and rectifying faults.

Applications close on 31 August. Follow the link to apply and learn more about each trade: https://www.evoenergy.com.au/Apprenticeships
