Krakatoa to ‘pop up’ at Kokomo’s

As Canberra’s restaurant and hospitality scene starts to slowly reawaken and come to life once more, venues are announcing new menus and concepts. The creative minds behind some of Canberra’s favourite foodie haunts have announced their latest venture, Krakatoa, a pop-up dining experience serving high-end Asian barbecue at Kokomo’s.

Combining the flavour and style of their venues, Akiba and Sage Dining Rooms, owners Peter and Michael Harrington have temporarily fitted out the dining room at their other venue, Kokomo’s, for the limited pop-up.

“We have decided to temporarily shift our focus from the nightlife scene to dining, so we can utilise our space more efficiently and offer locals a menu that is innovative and celebrates the reopening of the hospitality industry,” the pair say.

“We want to bring the same atmosphere and energy that locals know and love us for into this new menu at a time where it has been harder to do so.”

Krakatoa opens from Thursday 8 October and will see two eight-course menus available that will “unite earthy and primal flavours, tamed by refined techniques”.

The omnivore menu will dish up the likes of Thai beef and macadamia pie tee, barbecue pork belly and wood fired duck curry, while an order from the vegan menu would include pickled shitake, tempura eggplant and sweet potato curry.

Executive chef Johnon Macdonald said the menu explores a mix of old and new favourites.

“While we have included some classic flavours that our diners are familiar with, we have reinterpreted them in a way that is completely new for us and shares our passion for innovative dining,” he said.

Krakatoa will run for a limited time at Kokomo’s, 1 Genge Street, City, from Thursday 8 October. To book a table, visit krakatoabbq.com.au
