Man drowns near Kiama after getting caught in rip

A man has tragically drowned at South Bombo Beach, near Kiama, on the NSW South Coast.

Emergency services were called just before 5pm on Thursday, 26 December, after reports that bystanders were performing CPR on a man who had been pulled from the surf.

Officers from the Lake Illawarra Police District assisted with CPR until NSW Ambulance paramedics arrived.

Unfortunately, despite efforts, the 52-year-old man could not be revived and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police learned that the man had been swimming with his 18-year-old relative when both became caught in a rip.

Several members of the public entered the water and managed to remove the pair from the surf. The 18-year-old was uninjured.

A report will be prepared for the coroner’s review.
