Manuka Oval set for three more BBL matches

Manuka Oval will play host to three more BBL games in January after Cricket Australia were forced to move the games from Sydney as a result of state border closures.

Canberra was used as a playing hub to start the BBL10 season, hosting six games through December and cricket lovers in the nation’s capital now have another opportunity to catch some fast paced T20 action.

The first match back at Manuka is the highly anticipated Sydney derby between the Thunder and Sixers on Wednesday 13 January.

The derby will have some extra meaning to it with the second-placed Thunder a chance of leap-frogging the Sixers into first place with a victory.

The second match again features the Sixers as they take on the Perth Scorchers on Saturday 16 January before the third match on Monday 18 January between the Thunder and Hobart Hurricanes.

There will also be plenty on the line for the Scorchers and Hurricanes as they look to secure their spot in the finals as the end of the season approaches.

Cricket Australia’s Head of Big Bash Alistair Dobson said the decision to move the matches was made in line with Cricket Australia’s commitment to giving the BBL the best chance of completing a full season.

“The decision to move these three matches from Sydney to Canberra has been taken to ensure the continuation of the KFC BBL|10 season despite the ongoing public health situation and related state border closures,” said Dobson.

“We understand this will be disappointing news for the thousands of passionate Sixers and Thunder members and fans in Sydney. We want those fans to know that we greatly appreciate their support and know they’ll be tuning in to cheer their teams on.”

All matches will be played in line with ACT Health directions. Tickets are available for purchase at cricket.com.au/tickets.

The three games to be moved are:

  • January 13: Sydney Thunder v Sydney Sixers, originally scheduled to be played at Sydney Showground Stadium at 7:15pm AEDT
  • January 16: Sydney Sixers v Perth Scorchers, originally scheduled to be played at Sydney Cricket Ground at 6:40pm AEDT
  • January 18: Sydney Thunder v Hobart Hurricanes, originally scheduled to be played at Sydney Showground Stadium at 7:15pm AEDT
