Netflix movie being filmed near Canberra

A touch of Hollywood is in town with the filming of a new Netflix movie.

Featuring Australiaโ€™s own Eric Bana, South African actress Charlize Theron and Welsh actor Taron Egerton, Apex, is being filmed in NSW, including at Ginninderra Falls in Wallaroo and Bowning near Yass.

Further afield in the state, shooting is also taking place in the Blue Mountains and Sydney.

More than 460 local jobs were created, with the filming set to contribute an estimated $56.5 million in expenditure to NSWโ€™s economy, a Netflix statement said.

The major international production stars Theron (who featured in Mad Max: Fury Road, Monster), Egerton (Carry-On, Kingsman: The Secret Service, Rocketman) and iconic Australian actor Bana (The Castle, The Dry).

The film, which is directed by Baltasar Kormรกkur, centres on a grieving woman who seeks solace in the wilderness, only to find herself ensnared in a deadly game of cat and mouse with a serial killer.

Kormรกkur said: โ€œFor a film like Apex โ€” where the elements and the terrain are characters that loom just as large as the movie stars battling in it โ€” no other country in the world could have taken the place of Australia as our primary locationโ€.

โ€œThe unrivaled landscape, studio facilities, and talented crews in New South Wales have been a boon to this production. I want to thank the people of NSW, the NSW Government, and The Australian Governmentโ€™s Location Offset for all the support weโ€™ve received in making this journey possible,โ€ he said.

The film is set to impact the NSW screen industry and the stateโ€™s broader economy, with employment opportunities for local cast and crew, along with hospitality, catering, security and other on-set operations.

The Apex production team is working with Screen Careers to give trainees hands-on experience, and a chance to be mentored and work on a world-class production.

The production has been made possible through the support of Screen NSWโ€™s Made in NSW Fund.

On IMDB, the film is described as โ€œWhen an adrenaline junkie sets out to conquer a menacing river, she discovers that nature isn’t the only thing out for bloodโ€.

The Netflix Tudum website said there was no word yet on when the film would be released.
