Three police officers were injured after being struck by a vehicle at the National Arboretum Canberra yesterday afternoon, Sunday 11 July. ACT Policing is investigating the traffic incident.
About 2.50pm yesterday, the three officers were conducting a routine traffic stop of a vehicle on Forest Drive when a green Ford sedan collided with the officers on the side of the road.
One officer suffered a broken leg, one a back injury and another a shoulder injury.
The injured officers received treatment from ACT Ambulance Service paramedics at the scene. They were subsequently transported to hospital for further treatment.
Superintendent Corey Heldon said this incident will be thoroughly investigated, but reminded the community that driving a vehicle at any person is a serious offence.
“We are investigating whether the driver deliberately drove at police,” Superintendent Heldon said.
“Police being deliberately injured while they are doing their job is never acceptable.
“I am thankful these three officers are alive; however, one of them is seriously injured. The consequences of this incident could easily have been much worse.
“I ask anyone who saw this incident who has not spoken to police to do so as soon as possible, in order to enable us to fully investigate the circumstances.”
The driver of the green Ford sedan is in custody and assisting police with enquiries.
