ACT Greens leader Shane Rattenbury responds to claims of anti-Semitism

The ACT and Australian Greens completely reject, and have always completely rejected, antisemitism. It is one of the most dangerous forms of hate in our community.

As with all forms of racism, we recognise that it is not enough to simply not be antisemitic, but rather we must be anti-racist and active allies of the Jewish community. In doing so, we must acknowledge that antisemitism can take numerous forms, involving numerous tropes around the Jewish community.

One such trope is associating the Jewish people with the State of Israel, its actions and its government. This is of course, is wrong and antisemitic. In reality, many members of the Jewish community, including in our own party, are strong activists against the State of Israel’s subjugation of the Palestinian people.

We in the Greens are proud to stand with such activists in calling for a ceasefire in Gaza and Palestine-Israel more broadly, to save the lives of Palestinians and Jews alike. We are equally proud to stand with activists in calling for an end to the State of Israel’s perpetuation of the crime of Apartheid against Palestinians, and its occupation of Palestinian territories.

I completely reject any suggestion that the Greens support Hamas and its war crimes. We unequivocally condemn the atrocities committed on October 7.

We will continue to work hard to make the Canberra community welcoming for those in the Jewish community who chose to call this city home.
