Road closures, public transport changes for Summernats

Delays are expected on the roads with closures during the Summernats 37 car cruise today, Thursday 2 January.

The car festival is being held from 2-5 January 2025 at Exhibition Park in Canberra (EPIC).

It is accompanied by a street festival in Braddon.

A number of road closures and changed traffic arrangements will be in place for Summernats, which includes the city cruise along Northbourne Avenue on Thursday afternoon.

The city cruise will be held from noon to 1pm.

Rolling closures will be in place southbound on the Federal Highway from the Antill Street roundabout and southbound at Northbourne Avenue to the intersection with London Circuit.

The northbound traffic will also be impacted with rolling closures on Northbourne Avenue between the intersections with London Circuit and Flemington Road.

The rolling closures will close intersections as the cruise passes, which will apply to all traffic including motorists, pedestrians and cyclists.

Traffic management including signage and detours will be in place. Delays are expected and road users should seek an alternate route where possible.

There will also be changes to the city’s public transport system while the cruise is running.

Light rail services will not be operating between Alinga Street and Sandford Street stops from noon to 1pm.

Light rail services will continue to operate between Gungahlin Place and Sandford Street only during these times:
– The last direct northbound service travelling from Alinga Street to Gungahlin Place will depart at 11:40 am, with the first direct service resuming at 1pm.
– The last direct southbound service travelling from Gungahlin Place to Alinga Street will depart at 11:40 am, with the first service resuming at 12:50 pm.

The traffic will also be impacted on Lonsdale Street in Braddon where the Summernats Fringe Festival is being held, which will run from 5-11pm on January 2, 3, and 4.

Lonsdale Street and sections of surrounding Mort Street, Elouera Street and Torrens Street will be closed from 3pm on each of these days to support the festival.

Other closures are the EPIC Park and Ride from 7am on Thursday 2 January 2025 until 7pm on 5 January.

Users of the EPIC Park and Ride are asked to use nearby facilities at Well Station Drive and Swinden Street.

Flemington Road will be closed between the Federal Highway and Randwick Road from:
– 7am to 11:59pm on 2 January
– 7am on Friday 3 January to 1am on 4 January 2025
– 7am on 4 January to 1am on 5 January
– 7am to 7pm on 5 January 2025.

There will also be changes to the bus services. Due to road closures in place, bus route 18 will be diverted from the first service on 2 January to the last service on 5 January 2025.

Bus stops on Sandford Street, Philip Avenue on the Federal Highway and at Bimberi Youth Justice Centre will not be serviced during the event.

Temporary bus stops will be installed at the end of Hoskins Street before Sandford Street.

There will be increased frequency to light rail services during the peak event hours on 3 January from 6:30-11:30pm and 4 January, from 8:30am to 11:30pm.
