Young man drowns at Pine Island Reserve

Sadly, a 21-year-old man has died following an incident at Pine Island Reserve in Greenway yesterday afternoon.

“At around 6pm, police and emergency services responded to reports of a man who had failed to resurface while swimming in the Murrumbidgee River,” said Detective Acting Inspector Alex Chapman.

“A search for the man commenced, and AFP divers located the man at approximately 7:50 PM. Police would like to take the opportunity to remind all swimmers to be cautious in and around our waterways.

“Tragically, he was with his friends and family at the time. It was a distressing scene for both his loved ones and the responding emergency services.”

Detective Acting Inspector Chapman said it was too early to speculate whether any other factors, such as alcohol consumption, played a role in the death and said that investigations have commenced, and a report will be prepared for the coroner.

Anyone who witnessed the incident who has not already spoken to police is urged to contact ACT Policing on 131 444. Please quote reference 7938612.
