To help Canberra’s community clubs reduce reliance on gambling revenue, the ACT Government has awarded more than $1.5 million in the tier 2 funding round of the Diversification and Sustainability Support Fund (DSSF).
“Diversifying club income sources is in everyone’s best interests as we focus on strengthening the positive role clubs play in our community,” Shane Rattenbury, ACT Minister for Gaming, said..
“I thank the applicants for their interest – in particular, for upgrades that further reduce Canberra’s dependence on fossil fuels and promote sustainability in the sector.”
- Canberra Services Club: $250,000 to renovate and upgrade its conference facilities
- Harmonie German Club Canberra: $233,000 to purchase equipment for outdoor catering
- Canberra Southern Cross Club: $225,000 to convert a gas-fuelled kitchen to electrical at its Tuggeranong venue
“The government funding will assist us to provide a 100 per cent electric kitchen as part of our venue refurbishment and dining precinct upgrade,” Canberra Southern Cross Club CEO Matt Walshe said.
“The club has a strategic stance of being a leader in environmentally sustainable practices, and the refurbishment of our Tuggeranong venue will enable us to continue our diversification plans.
“The larger, new layout of our bistro and introduction of the indoor and outdoor spaces will enable the club to increase its offering and services to the community.”
- Ainslie Football and Social Club: $225,000 to redevelop its land surrounding Alan Ray Oval
- Hellenic Club of Canberra: $200,000 for its planning and design assessment for its multipurpose arena
- Canberra Tradesmen’s Union Club: $200,000 to refurbish its restaurant
- Canberra Labor Club: $184,000 to install new solar panels.
“The Diversification and Sustainability Support Fund demonstrates the ACT Government’s commitment to supporting clubs to diversify their revenue away from gambling activities,” Mr Rattenbury said.
“It is also incumbent on individual clubs and the industry collectively to take responsibility and play a proactive role in moving away from gambling activities and contributing to our community in a more positive way.”
