Breaking burger news in Canberra

The case could be made for this week (20-26 February) to go down in history as Capital burger week.

With a whopping total of 600 free burgers being dished up between two local burger joints, Grease Monkey adding the charitable ‘Steak Burley Griffin’ to their menu, and a newcomer setting up shop in Dickson, Canberra burger-lovers can literally eat their hearts out.

With all this burger news to cover, CW brought in the help of an expert.

Zac from All About Burgers is a self-described “burger prophet”, dedicated to providing Canberrans “real public service,” i.e., the knowledge of what to order from every single burger joint in the bush capital.

First on the cutting board, Burger Villains is opening their fourth joint in Mitchell this Saturday, 25 February. To celebrate, they’ll be dishing up 100 free burgers to the first 100 customers. The 100th customer will score a $100 Burger Villains voucher and the 200th customer will score a $200 voucher.

Customers can choose between the popular cheeseburger or the signature Villain burger (no modifications, please and thank you).

Our favourite thing about Burger Villains is their ‘one crime at a time’ mantra, meaning they aim to break your diet, not the bank, with plenty of meal deals on offer. Their newest location is at 43 Brookes Street, Mitchell, open 12-9pm seven days a week.

Zac’s top pick: “For me, the go-to at Burger Villains is the double cheeseburger – genuine smash patties, American cheese, pickles, onions, tomato sauce and mustard on a soft Urbun Bakery potato bun. One of my favourite simple burgers in Canberra.”

For a burger with a feelgood factor, look no further than Grease Monkey’s new ‘Steak Burley Griffin’, which was launched on Tuesday to raise money for the Canberra Day Appeal.

The Hands Across Canberra fundraiser will see 10 per cent of all sales going towards 360 local charities.

The Canberra-inspired burger is packed with steak, Canberra gin-pickled beetroot, Pialligo bacon, BentSpoke Crankshaft caramelised onion, BentSpoke Crankshaft tempra pickles, Bega cheddar, rocket, and Greasy Baconais. Now that’s a mouth-watering collaboration.

Available both in-store and for delivery from now until Thursday 16 March.

Zac’s top pick: Grease Monkey’s all-time classic ‘The Greasy’ has appeared on numerous All About Burgers’ Top 5’s, available for perusing on their Instagram. “Knowing Grease Monkey, The Steak Burley Griffin will hit the spot with the Canberra faithful and be a success for their loyal customers!”

100 free burgers not enough for you? What about 500? Pattysmiths is also opening their third Canberra joint in Manuka this Friday 24 February. They’re giving away 500 of their signature golden-crust burgers from 12-3pm, or until sold out.

It’s only their Original Pattysmiths Burger up for grabs, and they’ll be slinging them hot off the stove at Shop 5-6 Manuka Shopping Terrace, 18 Flinders Way.

Although Pattysmiths’ isn’t a favourite of Zac’s, we have it on good authority that their plant-based vegan burgers and hot onion rings come highly recommended for lovers of meat-free comfort food.

And finally, the mysterious newcomer. The wild card. Say hello to Hello Harry.

Nationally known for their Instagrammable burgers, the burger joint opened its first ACT store yesterday at 55 Wooley Street, Dickson.

Franchisee owner Chai Karuturi has called Canberra home for almost a year now, loving the peaceful vibe and foody scene of the Inner North. He spent over 12 months looking for the perfect location for his store, which is the old locale of Rasa Sayang.

Zac hasn’t tried Dickson’s Hello Harry yet, and neither have we, but Chai recommends the southern fried chicken burger and beef maple bacon burger.

And there you have it. Canberrans craving a burger are truly spoilt for choice this week. But the question is, which one will you try?
