11-year-old girl and father drown at Paddys River

ACT Policing is investigating the circumstances surrounding the drowning deaths of an 11-year-old girl and her 48-year-old father yesterday afternoon, Saturday 19 December, at Paddys River, in Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve in the ACT’s south-west.

Emergency services were called to the location around 2.20pm. At this stage police do not believe these deaths are suspicious.

ABC News reports that on arrival, police pulled the man from the water and commenced CPR but could not revive him. His daughter’s body was later found hundreds of metres downstream.

Detective Acting Inspector Simon Coady said it appeared the man had entered the water to try and rescue his daughter, the ABC reports.

A report is being prepared for the Coroner.

ACT Policing remind Canberrans to take care when swimming and watch out for each other when in and near the water.
