13-year-old boy charged over Kefu family attack

A 13-year-old boy has been charged over a home invasion that left Wallabies great Toutai Kefu and his family with sickening injuries.

All four members of the Kefu family needed surgery after being attacked with an axe, a machete and a knife at their Coorparoo home about 3am on Monday.

Kefu, 47, was critically injured by a gang of teens intent on stealing a car.

His wife Rachel, 46, suffered severe arm injuries. Their son, 21, suffered wounds to his arm and back and their daughter, 18, had arm and hand injuries.

Family members say all four have undergone surgery and are recovering.

Police on Tuesday charged a 13-year-old boy over an earlier burglary and car theft at a Forest Lake home. It’s alleged that car was then used in the raid on the Kefu home at Coorparoo about 45 minutes later.

The 13-year-old has also been charged over the burglary and wounding at the Kefu home. He has been refused bail after a hearing in the Brisbane Children’s Court and will reappear on August 20.

A 15-year-old boy was also charged over the Kefu attack on Monday night. He’s accused of attempted murder, assault causing grievous bodily harm, break and enter and other offences.

Another 15-year-old boy remains in custody. He has not yet been charged.

Police say the family was attacked after one member heard noises in their home and went to investigate.

“That person was accosted by at least one of the offenders in the premises and threatened to be stabbed if they didn’t hand over vehicle keys,” police told reporters on Monday.

“Other members of the family came to that person’s aid and, during this time, very significant injuries occurred to the family.”

Police are due to hold a press conference about the attack on Tuesday afternoon.
