Round one recap
Sydney Swans 2nd – 180.3% | 110 points for | 61 points against | 1 win & 0 losses
The Swans put to bed some of their grand final demons with a strong round one performance, smashing the Suns by 49 points in tough conditions on the Gold Coast.
Given the humid conditions, the game was essentially played in wet weather conditions and Sydney managed it perfectly.
There pressure on the Suns was elite all night and despite losing the clearances and contested possessions, as soon as the ball got into space, Sydney was far superior and did as they pleased most of the night.
Veteran Dane Rampe was sensational down back, while youngsters Errol Gulden, Dylan Stephens and Chad Warner led the way in the midfield.
It was an ideal start for the Swans and they now have the perfect chance to make it 2-0 before a string of difficult match ups.
Hawthorn Hawks 18th – 52.4% | 65 points for | 124 points against| 0 wins & 1 loss
While there wasn’t much expectation around this young Hawthorn squad heading into 2023, the 59-point loss to Essendon in round one was still a big disappointment.
The Hawks decided to offload some experienced players over the off-season and have dedicated themselves to going down the youthful path over the next couple of seasons.
Skipper James Sicily had a good game down back, while James Worpel found some of his old form in the midfield with 29 touches and 2 goal assists.
While the club has flagged some struggles this year, the side needs to show more resilience than they did in round one or it could be a very long season for Hawks fans.
