A 24-year-old man has accrued 6 demerit points and been fined $1841 for driving 173km/h in a 100km/h zone along the Majura Parkway.  

About 10.00pm on Sunday 3 April, the Ford Mustang GT driver was detected by police radar travelling southbound. The driver was issued with an infringement for exceeding the speed limit by more than 45 km/h. 

Officer in Charge ACT Road Policing, Detective Acting Inspector Paul Hutcheson said this kind of reckless driving is what contributes to ACT Road fatalities.  

“The message here is to slow down. You can’t just drive this fast ‘by mistake’, it’s a deliberate choice to put other road users in danger. There is absolutely no reason to be driving that fast,” Det A/Insp Hutcheson said.  

Speeding is one of the five main contributors to fatal accidents (in addition to alcohol or drug-impaired driving, not wearing a seatbelt, intersections and driver distraction) and it contributes to a large portion of all collisions on ACT roads.
