36-year-old man caught drink driving twice in an hour

A 36-year-old man will face court after ACT Policing caught him drink driving twice in an hour earlier this morning.

About 4.15am this morning, Sunday 5 June, Gungahlin Station officers were conducting a mobile patrol of Mitchell when they observed a Nissan utility making multiple attempts to leave a car park.

The vehicle was stopped shortly after and the 36-year-old driver from Latham returned a positive screening test for alcohol.

He was transported to Gungahlin Station, where he returned a reading of 0.103 grams of alcohol in 210 litres of breath.

The man was served an immediate suspension notice, suspending his right to drive in the ACT and he was released from custody.

About 5.15am police observed the same Nissan utility driving on Grimwade St in Mitchell and it was again stopped by police.

The driver was the same man who had been issued an immediate licence suspension only minutes earlier. As such he was now subject to a 0.00 limit for alcohol while driving.

He was again transported to Gungahlin Station where he returned a reading of 0.095 grams of alcohol per 210 litres of breath.

He was arrested and transported to the ACT Watch House.

The man now faces two drink driving charges as well as a drive while disqualified charge.

Police urge Canberra drivers not to drink and drive. Alcohol impaired driving is a significant risk factor for serious and fatal collisions and puts both the driver and other road users at risk.

Meanwhile, the ACT recorded its 10th road fatality last night after a 19-year-old woman died in a single vehicle crash at Black Mountain.
