4,000 trips per day: e-scooter data released

Love them or loathe them, Canberra’s ubiquitous e-scooters are making more than 4,000 trips per day on average, according to trip data from e-scooter companies Neuron Mobility and Beam released by the ACT Government today.

The data revealed around three-quarters of trips taken were between one and two kilometres, and Saturdays are the most popular day of the week to get in some scooting action.

Canberrans also prefer to scoot in the evenings and afternoons rather than take a morning trip.

“With a median trip length of just over eight minutes, Canberrans also appear to be using the e-scooters for a good time, not for a long time,” said ACT Transport and City Services Minister, Chris Steel.

The record for the most trips in one day sits at 9,325, reached on Saturday 21 November 2020.

“Since the share scheme commenced in September last year, e-scooters have proven an incredibly popular way for Canberrans to make short journeys linking to workplaces, tourist destinations, social activities and public transport,” Mr Steel said.

He said early analysis shows increasingly popular routes emerging, linking suburbs like O’Connor and Turner to the City.

The ACT Government is undertaking a review of the e-scooter scheme which will consider safety, regulation and integration with other forms of transport. It will also look at whether the scheme could expand to other regions beyond the Inner North, Inner South and the City and Belconnen.

“The e-scooters are still a relatively new addition to Canberra’s transport mix, and there’s more we need to understand about where and how they are contributing to helping people get around our city,” said Mr Steel.

Results from a survey on how the scooters are being used and community attitudes towards them will also inform the review.

The survey can be found on the Transport Canberra website.
