The death of a 43-year-old man in Taylor yesterday, Wednesday 8 December, has now been counted as the tenth death on ACT Roads in 2021, ACT Policing advised today.
A joint ACT Policing/WorkSafe ACT investigation has confirmed the incident occurred on a public road, in a construction area, not on a worksite, and is therefore being included in the road toll.
About 11.25am yesterday, police were alerted to reports of a man being pinned by a truck trailer at a home site on Crone Terrace, Taylor.
ACT Ambulance Service Paramedics also attended and despite their efforts, a 43-year-old man died at the scene.
The joint ACT Policing and WorkSafe ACT investigation into the incident is continuing.
In a media statement issued today, WorkSafe ACT said their organisation “attended an incident on Wednesday morning where a 43-year-old man has tragically passed away”. ACT Policing has confirmed the incident occurred on a public road, in a new residential development area.
Work Health and Safety Commissioner Jacqueline Agius offered her sympathy and deepest condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the worker, and expressed her sadness at this tragic loss of life.
“Our thoughts are very much with the loved ones of the worker and his colleagues. This was a terrible and distressing incident,” Ms Agius said.
“As we get close to the end of what has without a doubt been a challenging year, I urge workers, employers and the ACT community to always, without exception, put safety first. Together we can prevent serious injury and fatalities.”
In the statement, WorkSafe ACT said “the end of the year is always busy with people rushing to finish projects at work before they take a well-earned break. WorkSafe ACT reminds everyone to take extra care and time to ensure they are looking after themselves, their workers, and their work colleagues. We want everyone to return home to their families at the end of the day.”
