5 free or affordable ways to spoil Mum

Mother’s Day is this Sunday (8 May), and not everyone is willing or able to fork out for a spa day or fancy dinner. Truth be told, these celebratory occasions can happily be more about showing love than shelling out. After all, the best things in life are free, here are some that you can give to Mum this Sunday.

1. Breakfast in Bed: We’re starting out with the classics but don’t worry, we have suggestions for the mums who can’t stand getting crumbs in their sheets. For those of us who aren’t accomplished home chefs, the first tip for nailing breakfast in bed is to keep it simple. The more basic the recipe, the less chance of crashing (plates) and burning (toast). Just be sure to wash the dishes and put them away afterwards, too! Read our simple breakfast in bed recipes here.

2. Chore “gift cards”: Mums are like everyone else; they have chores they deign, and chores they do anyway. This weekend, why not get the kids to make colourful “gift cards” to help out a little more around the house, whether that be folding laundry, taking out the rubbish (without having to be asked) or cleaning out the cupboard that has been bugging her for ages.

3. Little luxuries: If your mum is selfless to a fault, chances are you’ve been in the shop with her countless times when she’s picked up a special something, then put it back down, leaving it behind for “a special occasion”. Well, that was a hint, and this is the occasion. It doesn’t have to be something wildly expensive, maybe a new tool from Bunnings, or a soap in her favourite scent. 4. Rent her favourite movie: Blockbuster may be dead, but YouTube has a plethora of films to rent online. Supply the snacks, set some time aside, and give Mum a movie night that’s all about her, where she doesn’t have to worry about watching something that “everyone wants to see”.

5. Mend her favourite piece of clothing: Is it a dress that no longer fits? An apron that’s been singed one too many times? Maybe a pair of pants that she’s always wishing had pockets. Sneak it out of her closet before Mother’s Day and take it to a tailor, or get handy with a needle, then surprise her on Sunday morning with an old favourite, made new.
