50-year-old speeding drug driver in defective car caught in Whitlam

ACT Policing arrested a 50-year-old man yesterday after he was detected speeding at more than 50km/h over the speed limit, with drugs in his system, while driving a defective and unregistered vehicle.

About 4pm yesterday, Thursday 1 December, ACT Road Policing officers in Whitlam detected a Subaru Forrester travelling at 110km/h on John Gorton Drive which has a 60km/h limit.

After being stopped by police, the driver returned a positive roadside drug test.

On inspection of his vehicle, police identified it was missing its accelerator pedal and a ‘rope pull’ mechanism was being used to operate the accelerator. Further checks revealed the vehicle’s registration was suspended due to unpaid fines.

The vehicle was issued a defect notice preventing it from being driven and the man was taken into custody. He is expected to be charged with aggravated dangerous driving and other offences.

Police remind all drivers of the need to ensure vehicles are roadworthy and registered.
