Funding from the Australian and ACT Governments means $6 million worth of new road safety upgrades and improvements will soon be delivered across Canberra.
According to Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Michael McCormack, the additional works for under the national $2 billion Road Safety Program would being immediately, improving safety and supporting jobs in the ACT.
The works include CCTV for key intersections, traffic calming measures, road safety barriers and improvements to walking and cycling safety around schools.
“The Australian Government takes road safety seriously, which is why we want to get boosts in the ground and shovels in the dirt as soon as possible to ensure these additional works are delivered quickly for Canberrans and visitors,” said the Deputy Prime Minister.
The Australian Government’s funding for the Road Safety Program is subject to ‘use it or lose it’ provisions, requiring states and territories to use their notionally allocated funds within a given timeframe. If not used, the funds can be reallocated to projects in other jurisdictions.
ACT Minister for Transport and City Services Chris Steel said the ACT Government would join with the Commonwealth to invest in improved safety on the Territory’s road network, supporting the local economy, creating jobs, and benefiting all road users.
According to Senator for the ACT Zed Seselja, the timing of the funding could not be better as it flows to crucial road safety improvements in Canberra as the New Year gets back into full swing.
“I am pleased to see a total of $6 million will be shared across Canberra to fund road new safety upgrades and improvements to help reduce the number of fatalities and serious injuries occurring on our roads,” Senator Seselja said.
“The most important thing we can do for our community is ensure we all get home safely as even one death or one serious injury crash on our roads is one too many.”
