2022 has more trends to offer than low-rise jeans and late 2000’s revivals. We turned our heads away from the red carpet, and to the streets to see what the most stylish pedestrians have to show us.
In the second year of the pandemic, gloves have literally never been so popular. In turn, fashion gloves, less about practicality and more about making a statement, have been spotted both on the red carpet and in streetwear, as seen by this exceptionally chic Paris Fashion Week guest.
Dopamine Dressing, the official term for wearing glitter, feathers, bright colours, and excess with the aim of boosting the mood in unprecedented times, is my favourite trend on this list. French model Didi Stone silences naysayers that might write off the trend as tacky, looking like sheer elegance in this iridescent gown.
Barbie Bags are whacky accessories that remind us of childhood, and in turn simpler times – we’re dressing for our inner kid here, people. In 2022, we’ll see statement purses that vary in degrees of cartoonish and camp, like the heart-shaped Coach crossbody that sold out in a day. Where do you think Dua Lipa’s puppy purse sits on the scale?
Chain belts were everywhere in 2021 – and at every price point – but the Chanel 2021/2022 collection showed elevated chain accessories with sophisticated looks, as taken to Parisian model Guo Xiayan.
The highly duped House of Sunny cardigan brought fur detailing back into the spotlight. Because it is 2022, no one wants to see a real fur coat, especially if it’s brand new. Instead, it’s all about shopping second-hand, or embracing obvious faux, as shown here by the stunning Ola Rudnicka.
Thank God empire waistlines have returned at the same time as drop waist silhouettes. This is in large part thanks to the popularity of voluminous dresses, like the Selkie dress, that embrace femininity without having to showcase an hourglass. Influencer Summer Rachel Warren wears my absolute favourite outfit on this list.
An easy way to add colour or texture to any outfit, statement tights are one part of the returning “twee” aesthetic that I am excited to see.
