Duo arrested after attempted Woden burglary and police chase

ACT Policing have arrested two men after a they attempted to break into a storefront using angle grinders before engaging in a police pursuit.

About 9.20pm last night, Friday 11 November, two 18-year-old men were reported to police after witnesses saw them attempting to break into a store at Woden Shopping Centre.

Both men departed the scene however returned a few hours later to continue their attempt. Officers located the men who fled in a silver Holden Commodore, bearing stolen number plates. 

The duo then failed to stop for police and engaged in dangerous driving behaviour. Police began to pursue the vehicle however, due to safety concerns, it was called off. 

Officers attempted to re-engage the vehicle between Woden and the City where the vehicle reached speeds in excess of 130kmh. 

Officers deployed stop sticks at Bindubi Street, and the vehicle lost control when attempting to avoid the stop sticks, colliding with a light pole.  

The men then attempted to flee on foot, but where apprehended by police before being arrested and transported to hospital for treatment.  

The driver, who was unlicenced, tested positive for cannabis at the scene.  

The passenger was on bail at the time of the offence.  

They are expected to appear before the ACT Magistrates Court on Monday 14 November 2022.
