Today is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and the ACT Government urges Canberrans to make our community safe for all.

On this day each year, communities across the world begin 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence, seeking to end violence against women and girls.

Yvette Berry, ACT Minister for the Prevention of Domestic and Family Violence, said violence against women in any form is unacceptable.

“Gendered violence is an epidemic, and it takes the whole community stepping up to create long-lasting change,” Ms Berry said.

“Concerningly, we know that during the pandemic many women experienced violence from their partners for the first time.

“Those who use violence must be held accountable, and the onus is on the offender to change their behaviours.”

The ACT Government’s 2022-23 Budget provides $71.6 million over four years across a broad range of measures to address issues relating to domestic, family, and sexual violence.

“I encourage Canberrans to start conversations about gender-based violence with family and friends, learn more about the facts and what you can do to help,” Ms Berry said.

“Let’s unite in wearing orange this International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and make gender-based violence a thing of the past.”
