He’s been gracing our screens, stages and airwaves with his comedic musical stylings for years now.

And having built a number of different audiences through his work across multiple formats, acclaimed comedian Sammy J tells Canberra Daily his new show Major National Party is an attempt to “bring all my disparate audiences together for the first time”.

“The one thing that has never changed about me since high school is my sense of humour. What’s changed is the form I take in trying to making people laugh.

“I feel like I’ve found new audiences in the last few years … Broadly, I’m going to try and make this as crowd-pleasing as possible,” he says.

Sammy’s affinity for live comedy stems from the fact it’s where his roots as a performer lie.

“I’ve always considered myself a live performer, that’s how I started and that’s how I’ll finish. At some point, I’ll be thrown off television in some controversy,” he smiles.

“When people sit down and turn their phones off, that’s a show that’s only going to happen once. For me that’s the ultimate.”

While the politically tumultuous times we live in provide him with plenty of material, the challenge as a comedian is coming up with an original take.

“A headline will get shared around on twitter and a lot of comedians will share their take on it, so the challenge on my end is to put my spin on it and create a punchline or a joke no one’s heard of,” he says.

“I don’t want to write anything in the show that’s too specific and can fall out of date too quickly; I’d rather touch on broader themes than anything too specific.

While Sammy acknowledges “political nerds make up a big chunk of my audience these days”, his show doesn’t ask its audience to possess any prerequisite knowledge.

“Fifty per cent of the show won’t be political show at all; it’ll be me talking about being a nerd and my failed birthday parties as a kid,” he says.
