Drug driver arrested after pursuit through Canberra

A 30-year-old man has been arrested by ACT Policing after a multi-suburb pursuit ended in Ngunnawal.

About 9am yesterday, Wednesday 25 January, ACT Policing were made aware of a white Ford utility that was stolen from a commercial business in Hume.

Shortly after, the vehicle was involved in a pursuit in NSW which was terminated after the driver rammed a NSW Police Force vehicle.

The vehicle then crossed into the ACT and about 11am, the vehicle was spotted in Harrison. ACT Policing disengaged and re-engaged the vehicle multiple times due to the risk the driver posed to the public.

The vehicle was observed driving at 130km/h in a 80km/h zone and crossed onto the incorrect size of the road multiple times.

Officers located the vehicle on Kingsford Smith Drive where the vehicle failed to stop for police and stop sticks were successfully deployed.

Due to the stop sticks, the front tyres on the vehicle disintegrated and the vehicle was driving on its front rims.

A second stop stick device was deployed which successfully deflated one of the rear tyres.

The vehicle continued to drive dangerously, before crashing through a locked gate and driving on a greenbelt area behind residences in Ngunnawal.

The vehicle then attempted to drive through a wire fence and was stopped after driving onto a large rock.

After a foot pursuit across multiple backyards, officers arrested the 30–year-old male driver. The man resisted arrest and provided incorrect personal information to officers.

The man, who was on a good behavior order at the time of the incident, also produced a positive roadside result to a prescribed drug.

The man is set to face the ACT Magistrates Court tomorrow, Friday 27 January, and has been charged with driving while disqualified, failing to stop a motor vehicle, driving a motor vehicle without consent, refusing to provide an oral fluid sample, providing a false name and address, furious driving, possessing an offensive weapon with intent and breach of good behaviour orders.

Anyone with information including dash cam footage of the white utility driving dangerously is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or on the Crime Stoppers ACT website. Please quote reference PROMIS 7334288.
