If you’re planning a bushwalking adventure this winter, be aware that ACT reserves will close from 15 May to 9 June as the ACT Parks and Conservation Service removes feral animals.

Areas of Namadgi National Park, Murrumbidgee River Corridor, Molonglo River Reserve, Googong Foreshores, and Lower Cotter Catchment will close for visitor safety. Park and reserve closures will be staged, and many areas will remain open for large periods.

• Namadgi National Park Naas: closed 15 – 19 May
• Namadgi National Park West: closed 18 – 26 May
• Namadgi National Park North: closed 22 – 26 May
• Lower Cotter Catchment: closed 22 – 26 May
• Murrumbidgee River Corridor: closed 29 May – 4 June
• Molonglo River Corridor: closed 29 May – 2 June
• Googong Foreshores: closed 29 May – 2 June

Vertebrate pest species such as pigs and deer endanger threatened plant and animal species in parks and reserves through grazing, rubbing antlers, trampling, creating trails, disturbing the ground, and wallowing, ACT Conservator of Flora and Fauna Bren Burkevics explained.

“The vertebrate pest control program applies thermal aerial control methods to remove pest species from our conservation areas, and minimise their negative impacts on environmental, cultural, social, and economic assets.”

Extensive safety precautions will be in place, including buffer zones, signage, and sweeps before all operations. Aircraft may operate within the closed areas.

“Animal welfare is a priority, and all control activities undertaken in accordance with best practice and humane control of feral animals,” Ms Burkevics said.

The Australian Government supports and funds the project through the Regional Fund for the Australian Alps and the Commonwealth National Landcare program.
