10 tasty years of the Brodburger

Popular Canberran burger joint, Brodburger, is turning 10, and what a ride it has been – from a little red caravan by the lake to two bustling locations.

Brodburger’s owners, Sascha Brodbeck and Joelle Bou-Jaoude, or ‘Mr and Mrs Brod’, say they owe it all to their Canberra supporters.

“It feels so amazing. We feel truly blessed and so thankful every single day. We wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for our customers,” they say.

“We love what we do so much and care about our business and our customers, some of whom have become our friends and, in some way, a part of our Brod family.”

Brodburger began while Sascha was working long hours as a cook, when the couple had the idea to work for themselves. Lovers of comfort food, they thought “let’s make fresh, quality burgers. Cooked to order … and why not be able to choose your cheese?”

Their plan for a laneway restaurant in Manuka was rejected, and, early to the food truck craze, the Brodburger van was born, serving up burgers in Barton’s Bowen Park.

“We never questioned it – it felt right. So we bought the van within a week! It took six months to refurbish it. We poured all of our savings and then some into it, and the rest, as they say, is history.”

After being forced out of the location in 2011, the pair made the move to their current location at Canberra Glassworks in Kingston, and opened a second outlet at Capital Brewing Co. in Fyshwick in 2017.

“It feels amazing and like it was yesterday that we opened the window to our little red caravan,” they say, on their business turning 10.

Sascha and Joelle have invited everyone to Brod’s 10th birthday party, to say thank you to the Canberra community.

“We are so proud and humbled to have been able to do what we love for so long. We feel like we have grown with our business and learnt so much from it, from our staff and our customers.

“From the beginning to now we have really felt the love and want to always return it, so come celebrate with us!”

As for their favourite burgers? ‘Mr Brod’ is partial to a Brodburger with blue and Swiss cheese and bacon, while ‘Mrs Brod’ can’t go past a chicken with brie.

Brodburger’s 10th birthday party will be held on Saturday 30 March, with a scavenger hunt from 3pm; the party will kick off from 5pm with three hours of free burgers commencing at 5.30pm, at their Kingston restaurant only.
