A Canberra motorcyclist has been caught dangerously speeding, exceeding the speed limit by 55km/h on the Monaro Highway during yesterday’s Reconciliation Day public holiday.
ACT Policing caught a 59-year-old Chisholm man at about 3.50pm on Monday 29 May while police were conducting stationary speed checks on the south bound lanes of the Monaro Highway, Symonston.
Police said they heard a motorcycle approaching their position, which they believed to be travelling at high speed. Police checked the speed of the motorcycle using a certified laser instrument, which captured the speed of the motorcycle at 155km/h in a sign posted 100km/h zone.
When police stopped the motorcycle a short time later and told the rider how fast he was travelling, the rider allegedly claimed “he couldn’t see how that could be right”.
The Chisholm man was issued with a Traffic Infringement Notice for exceeding the speed limit by more than 45km/h, which carries a fine of $1,841 and 6 demerit points.
