Pets are often our cherished companions but very few of us have a plan in place should we find ourselves unable to look after them. That’s why it is important to prepare a petcare plan.
Pets & Positive Ageing (PAPA) highlighted the story of a 92-year-old with his two elderly dachshunds, who lived alone and his only family member in Canberra was difficult to get hold of.
The man was asked what his plans were for his dogs if he had to go into hospital and whether he had written a plan. These things are often thought about too late.
According to PAPA, a petcare plan provides important information for your pet’s next carer – such as their favourite food, that they are scared of vacuum cleaners, and where they like to sleep – to ensure they can be cared for in the manner to which they are accustomed.
Drafting a petcare plan and including your pet in your Will is a great way to ensure your wishes are known and your pet will be cared for.
PAPA suggests pet owners can also contact ACT Pet Crisis Support and Rainbow Paws for assistance or utilise the Pet Legacy Program at the RSPCA.
The RSPCA ACT’s Pet Legacy Program involves the organisation taking on ownership of an animal if an individual can no longer care for them due to ill health or passing. RSPCA ACT will provide the best of care while they look for a suitable home for the animal.
