Preliminary designs for more ACT shopping centre upgrades

The ACT Government has released preliminary designs for improvements at the Evatt local shops, Calwell Group Centre, and Lanyon Marketplace, as part of its suburban infrastructure upgrade program.

“We want to hear from the community about what improvement they would like to see in public spaces around their shops, responding to the concept designs that have been released,” Chris Steel, Minister for Transport and City Services, said.

“Some of the upgrades proposed include accessibility improvement including footpaths, car parking, and safe crossings. Other upgrades focus on improving spaces for gathering and enjoying public spaces around shopping centres whether it be with new seating and landscaping, murals, play elements, or lighting.

“Feedback will be used to inform the final designs which we expect to be complete around the end of the year ahead of construction.”

The ACT Government has also released preliminary designs for minor improvements at the local shops in Macquarie, Monash, and Narrabundah. A design and construct tender will shortly be released for these works; construction is expected to commence later this year.

Also in the second half of this year, upgrades will begin to Brierly Street in Weston next to Cooleman Court, the Charnwood Group Centre, and Hardwick Crescent at the Kippax Group Centre.

Major works at the local shops in Campbell and Duffy have already been completed.

“We are investing in more local shop upgrades by making sure shopping precincts are vibrant places for businesses and residents,” Mr Steel said.

“Increasingly, we are hearing from Canberrans about their desire to support local shopping centres and see businesses thrive. However, many of our older shopping centres are ageing, so we’re continuing our largest ever investment in suburban infrastructure upgrades to enhance these vital community hubs.”
