Giants forwards fire in comfortable win

The Giants have moved into the top eight after dominant second half saw them run out 13.5 (83) to 7.7 (49) winners against the Hawthorn Hawks at Giants Stadium.

The Giants key forwards have struggled in recent weeks but were back to their best with Harry Himmelberg and Jeremy Finlayson kicking four goals each while Jeremy Cameron kicked both of his in the last quarter.

The Giants started the game in fine fashion with a four-goal to none first quarter before the Hawks answered with a strong second quarter to reduce to the margin to just 10 points.

The first half was a low scoring grind with only eight goals kicked between the sides, but the Giants kicked it up a gear in the second half by kicking the first five goals of the third quarter to open up a 39-point lead.

However, the Hawks kicked three goals in a row themselves to reduce the margin to just 19 points heading into the last quarter.

The last quarter started off as a tight contest, but the Giants defenders managed to lock it down to make sure they ran out comfortable 34-point winners.

Star Performers

Nick Haynes

Haynes was once again a standout for the Giants with his ability to read the ball and intercept mark a feature of his game. He took 11 marks for the game and, along with Phil Davis, helped to repel many of the Hawks’ forays forward. He would have to be the first defender picked in the All-Australian team right now.

Harry Perryman

While not one of the household names at the Giants, Perryman has become a star this season. The 21-year-old was leading the Coleman Medal earlier this year but was played more across halfback and through the midfield in this game and played superbly. He had 28 disposals and 11 marks in a sign that this kid is only getting better.

Harry Himmelberg and Jeremy Finlayson

The Giants have been crying out for one of their key forwards to star and these two delivered. They both kicked four goals straight and if they can continue this form, the Giants will be mighty hard to beat.
