Take 7 with John Floreani of Trophy Eyes

Over a decade in the music business and heavyweight post-punk rock Trophy Eyes have secured their third top ten ARIA album. Celebrating the success of Suicide and Sunshine, the band brings their regional tour to the University of Canberra on 20 October. CW caught up with frontman John Floreani ahead of the show to talk music and inspirations.

1. What can audiences expect at the show?

High energy music, catharsis, and the feeling of belonging. Come along and break something; youโ€™ll feel incredible afterwards.

2. Tell us about Suicide and Sunshine.

Thereโ€™s a lot to tell, but Iโ€™ll do my best to summarise. S&S was to be our last record. We went into the studio to say farewell to each other and our listeners but changed our minds when we heard it back. Itโ€™s something very special to us.

3. Why did you want to do a regional tour?

Regional tours are always a different kind of fun. The people are more laidback and open, the travel is more fun with plenty to do and see along the way. Itโ€™s always a great time.

4.Ten years of Trophy Eyes, how has the journey been so far, any highlights?

The journey has been hard, bitter, beautiful and unforgettable. Every day that I get to keep doing what I do is a highlight.

5.When did you know you wanted to be a musician?

When I first heard Blink-182.

6.Who are your idols and inspirations?

I have so many. My mother, my friends, and obviously all the bands that paved the way for us โ€“ Blink-182, Touche Amore, The Story So Far, etc.

7.Whatโ€™s next for you?

Iโ€™m not sure. Whatever the world throws at me.

Catch John Floreani and Trophy Eyes at UC Hub, University of Canberra on Friday 20 October 7.30pm; moshtix.com.au
