Bailed man charged following Canberra pursuit

A 21-year-old Moncrieff who was bailed from court yesterday morning was arrested early today and charged with 10 offences following a pursuit across Canberra’s northern suburbs last night.

Yesterday, Wednesday 18 October, the man appeared before the ACT Magistrates Court where he received bail with conditions including that he be subject to a night-time curfew. He was also subject to a good behaviour order following a court appearance in 2022.

Last night, police received a report that a white Toyota Hilux was stolen from the Belconnen bus interchange.

About 12.15 this morning, Thursday 19 October, police observed the stolen Hilux in Macquarie and attempted to stop it. A pursuit commenced with significant police resources deployed in an effort to apprehend the driver.

Police will allege that during the incident the driver:

  • Repeatedly drove at police
  • Drove on the wrong side of the road
  • Repeatedly exceeded the speed limit
  • Failed to stop at multiple intersections
  • Failed to stop for police when directed to do so

The stolen vehicle was driven through multiple Belconnen suburbs, Lyneham and eventually came to a stop in Watson with multiple tyres deflated following the use of stop stick devices.

The 21-year-old man was apprehended and he was subsequently charged with 10 offences including breach of bail, breach of a good behaviour order, dangerous driving, two counts of fail to stop for police, three counts of drive at police, drive a motor vehicle without consent, and unlicenced driving (licence never held).

He is expected to appear in the ACT Magistrates Court today where bail will be opposed.

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident including anyone with dash-cam footage is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or via the Crime Stoppers ACT website. Please quote reference 7569242.
