Capitals face Perth in semi-final series

The University of Canberra Capitals are heading into WNBL playoffs on the back of a nine-game winning streak after they defeated Bendigo Spirit 101-97 in double overtime on 19 January.

The Capitals will face Perth Lynx in their semi-final series which starts on Friday 25 January at the AIS Arena, tip-off 7pm.

Game two of the series will be played on Thursday 31 January at Bendat Basketball Centre, Perth, with the third game, if necessary, to be played on Saturday 2 February at the AIS Arena.

Adelaide Lightning and Melbourne Boomers will meet in the second semi-final series.

In other news, National Basketball League action returns to the ACT on Saturday 26 January, tip off 2.50pm, with the Illawarra Hawks taking on the Cairns Taipans at the AIS Arena.

On Friday 25 January 10am-12pm, fans will have a chance to see the Hawks at an open training session at the AIS Arena, while in the afternoon, 1-4pm, the Hawks are hosting a free holiday camp at Belconnen Basketball Stadium. To register, contact Basketball ACT.

The Illawarra Hawks and the ACT Government announced a one-year partnership in November last year to bring an NBL game to the Territory. The ACT Government committed $125,000 to the partnership.


At a glance

ABL: The Canberra Cavalry travelled to Melbourne to take on the Aces in the first-ever ABL Wildcard Game on Wednesday 23 January. The winner, which was not known at time of print, will take on the Brisbane Bandits in a semi-final series starting on Friday 25 January. In other club news, the Cavalry recorded a split series against Perth to finish the regular season.

W-League: Canberra United’s match against Melbourne Victory was abandoned on Thursday 17 January due to lightning, with the match to be rescheduled. United are away to Brisbane Roar on Friday 25 January.

100 years strong: The Yass Magpies have unveiled a new logo for 2019 as the club celebrates its 100th year. Yass President Greg Smith said the design sees the Magpies symbol return to its original design while there is a modern twist amongst the other features. Originally competing in the Sydney competitions during their early years, the Magpies are the oldest club still in existence in the Canberra District.

Brumbies: Fullback Tom Banks has committed his future to the Brumbies and Australian rugby by signing a contract extension through to the end of 2022. The Brumbies have a couple of trial matches coming up starting with a game against the Rebels at Viking Park Erindale on Saturday 26 January 6.30pm. Entry is free. The team will play a second trial match against the Waratahs in Goulburn on Thursday 7 February 6.30pm with free entry to Brumbies and Waratahs members, and under 18s.

Super W: The Brumbies women’s sidewill head to Bowral on Saturday 2 February for a trial match against NSW (kick-off 2pm with free admission) and the following weekend, Saturday 9 February, will clash with the Rebels in Albury. The Brumbies Super W campaign will begin in mid-February and will feature two home matches and two away games before the finals series.
