Take 5 with Tim Rogers of You Am I, coming to The Basement

A staple on the Australian music scene, You Am I have been releasing albums and doing shows for over 30 years. After a three-year break from headline shows, they return with their national The You’s Pull Up Their Troos Tour, stopping in at The Basement Canberra in Belconnen on 7 December. CW caught up with frontman Tim Rogers ahead of the show.

  1. What should the audience expect from the show?

A masterclass in chicanery and showmanship. Underwritten with meticulously, methodically stolen songcraft and unnecessary wordplay.

  • When did you know you wanted to be a musician?

I’m still waiting for that penny to drop. I like being part of this gang, they’re inspiring people. That we make music seems … coincidental?

  • Do you have fond memories of your uni days in Canberra? Is there anything you like to do when you come back to town?

I will always have a wander through the grounds and imagine how much more fun and education I could have enjoyed if I was less immature. But the trees and scrub through the grounds are a perennial thrill.

  • Do you have any career highlights?

So much to learn, write and perform. Feel fortunate I have said “why not” rather than “no” in that regard.

  • Do you have a favourite song to perform?

The ones I don’t sing. It changes every night. We perform without a safety net, so tempos, intent, gravitas are in the whims of whatever collectively we are experiencing. It can be a thrill, or a small nightmare.

  • What’s next?

Hopefully some peace, some happiness, and if we have a great show, that’ll come. So, onward.
