More than 20,000 Canberra households have applied to participate in the Sustainable Household Scheme to make their homes more energy efficient.
The Sustainable Household Scheme provides zero-interest loans to eligible ACT residents and community groups to upgrade their premises or to use renewable energy products, including efficient heating and cooling, cooktop and hot water systems, solar panels, battery storage, electric vehicles, and ceiling insulation.
Since the Scheme began in July 2021, it has approved $200 million in loans and supported the installation of almost 17,000 sustainable upgrades, which Chief Minister Andrew Barr says saves households money on their energy bills and reduces the ACT’s carbon footprint.
“As a world leader in climate action, the ACT is committed to achieving net zero emissions by 2045,” Mr Barr said. “The Sustainable Household Scheme is a key part of our strategy, and the success we are seeing demonstrates the power of collective action.
“This milestone is a testament to the dedication and leadership of our community in tackling climate change. Canberrans are leading the way, showing that transitioning to a clean energy future is achievable and beneficial for everyone.”
The ACT Government has launched a Sustainable Household Scheme Dashboard, which shows which suburbs are leading the charge in sustainability; the most popular upgrade in your neighbourhood; and the number and types of upgrades being installed. As of 13 December:
- Highest overall uptake Kambah – $9,048,318 in zero interest loans accessed.
- Singing in the shower Dickson – 13 per cent of installs in Dickson are hot water heat pumps.
- Driving into the future Campbell – 34 per cent of products in Campbell are electric vehicles.
- Staying warm and keeping cool Kingston – 39 per cent of installs in Kingston are reverse cycle air conditioners.
- Comfort in the home Rivett – 4.6 per cent of installs in Rivett are for insulation.
- Most solar uptake Whitlam – 98 per cent of installs in Whitlam include solar systems.
“We are committed to supporting Canberrans in their transition to a cleaner future, and this new dashboard will help us track our progress and share the success stories of our community,” Mr Barr said.
