RSPCA ACT is calling for Canberrans to become ‘guardian angels’ to one of the animals spending the holiday period in the shelter.
Each donation to the appeal will sponsor an animal of the donor’s choice, to help with the costs of shelter operations. The donor receives updates.
RSPCA ACT CEO Michelle Robertson says the appeal is a meaningful gift to give to someone.
“Instead of just giving stuff … do something that has more meaning.
“It’s a really nice thing to do … that’s a lasting thing because you’re making a big difference to us and to the animals.”
During the festive period, RSPCA ACT expects to see more than 800 animals come into their care, requiring specialised care and attention. Some animals require medical care or behavioural training before they are ready for their new families.
“There are so many parts required for us to make the shelter run,” Ms Robertson says. “We just want to give them [the animals] the home they deserve.”
RSPCA ACT is also appealing for dog foster carers for their Project: SAFE program. The program provides support for animals and families fleeing domestic and family violence by providing emergency short-term boarding for the animals with a foster carer or foster family.
Ms Robertson says while they have an extensive network of feline foster carers, finding foster homes for dogs is particularly difficult due to the effects of domestic and family violence on the animal.
“Many times, dogs coming into our emergency boarding care foster homes are the ones that need a little more TLC due to the vicarious trauma they suffered,” she says.
“These dogs may also have experienced neglect and/or cruelty that can impact their behaviour. But we know that, with the right family and support, they can flourish.
“They’re not just pets are they? They’re members of the family.”
The Guardian Angel Appeal will be open until Christmas Day.
