Local initiatives seeking to contribute to the ACT’s reconciliation journey can share in $50,000 through the ACT Government’s 2024 Reconciliation Grants.
The ACT is the only jurisdiction with a public holiday focussed on advancing reconciliation: Reconciliation Day on Monday 27 May.
The Reconciliation Grants support individuals and organisations that wish to host events and activities in the lead-up to or on Reconciliation Day. Applications are open now, with up to $5,000 available for each event and initiative.
Anybody thinking about marking Reconciliation Day in their community or organisation should apply for a grant, Rachel Stephen-Smith, ACT Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs, said.
“Reconciliation is about building an understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and cultures,” the minister said. “It is about recognising our shared history and working towards a better future together.
“Reconciliation is everyone’s business, and I encourage Canberrans to be creative in how they recognise Reconciliation Day this year. This could involve hosting a workshop, sporting or community event, creating a mural, or organising a yarning circle with local Elders.
“Individuals and not-for-profit organisations can apply for a grant and help promote reconciliation in their community.”
Hockey ACT received a Reconciliation Day Grant last year to hold its second Reconciliation Round in 2023.
“The theme of the 2023 round was ‘Our Story’ which represents the many elements of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture shared through stories,” said Jolanta, participation and engagement manager.
All Hockey ACT members were encouraged to share their story and continue the conversations on reconciliation during the round and moving forward in the community.
Selina Walker, co-chair of the ACT Reconciliation Council and 2024 ACT Local Hero, supports the broader community getting involved in reconciliation.
“Reconciliation Day provides an opportunity for Canberrans to come together, talk, and learn from each other so we can all be a positive voice for generations,” Ms Walker said.
“Reconciliation is about all of us respecting and celebrating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history and connection to the land we live on. Working together to build a stronger Canberra and Australia is true reconciliation.
“The ACT is proud of being at the forefront of recognising and valuing social justice and diversity; and supporting reconciliation with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
“I encourage all Canberrans to consider applying for a Reconciliation Day Grant to continue our journey together towards Reconciliation.”
