Canberra lion dancers ready to celebrate Year of the Dragon

The Lunar New Year will be celebrated on Saturday 10 February and is shaping up to be a busy season for Canberra’s only non-profit, volunteer-run lion dance troupe, Prosperous Mountain Dragon and Lion Dance (aka Canberra Lion Dance) – especially as 2024 marks the Year of the Dragon.

David Wong, President of PMDLD, said that the Dragon holds a special place as a symbol of strength, wisdom, and good fortune.

“Those born in the Year of the Dragon are believed to be charismatic, ambitious, and destined for success,” Mr Wong said.

“As we embrace this auspicious year, Canberra Lion Dance invites the community to join in the festivities and experience the rich cultural traditions associated with the Lunar New Year.”

To mark the Year of the Dragon, Canberra Lion Dance will celebrate with local businesses throughout the ACT region.

“The performances will showcase the artistry of traditional lion dance, bringing an authentic cultural experience to audiences of all ages,” Mr Wong said.

Canberra Lion Dance invites members of the Canberra community to join in the festivities and share the joy of the Lunar New Year. These performances provide an opportunity for residents and visitors alike to immerse themselves in the vibrant traditions of Chinese culture.

“We encourage Canberrans who are thinking about coming to see us to make bookings at the restaurants and eateries that we are performing at. It’s a great way to support small business,” Mr Wong said.

“Our shop blessingd are a significant part of the Lunar New Year because traditionally, our lions ward off evil spirits, and bring luck and prosperity,” he said.

“We wish everyone a happy Lunar New Year, this Year of the Dragon!”
