The Giants will be aiming for their third win in a row when they travel to Metricon Stadium to take on the ladder-leading Port Adelaide Power this Sunday afternoon, 12 July.
The Giants have recorded back-to-back wins to get their season going again and are starting to play the sort of footy we have become accustomed to seeing from them.
The Giants only managed 26 inside 50s last round against the Hawks but their key forwards made the most of it with Harry Himmelberg, Jeremy Finlayson and Jeremy Cameron combining for 10 goals between them.
Despite having three wins to their name, the Giants haven’t won the inside 50 count once this season and average a league-worst 33.8 inside 50s per match
It’s a worrying trend for the Giants and one that coach Leon Cameron is keen to rectify.
“We just spoke about it as coaches before. We’d prefer another 10 or 12, clearly we’re aiming for around that 40 mark,” Cameron said.
“It’s been a little bit of an issue the last few weeks, even last week.
“We’ll go back to the drawing board and look at it and see if we can raise the bar in that part of the game.”
Despite losing the inside 50 counts, the Giants backline has been resolute with Nick Haynes fast becoming the best defender in the competition.
Their backline will have their work cut out for them against the Power, who lead the league in points scored heading into round 6.
The Power average a tick over 78 points a game which has become the benchmark with the reduced quarters and lower scoring.
However, they are coming off their worst performance of the season, managing just 48 points against the Brisbane Lions in what was their biggest test of the season.
The Power dominated their first four opponents but against a quality side in the Lions, they simply couldn’t match them right across the park.
Fortunately for the Power, they get another chance to prove themselves against another premiership contender on Sunday, so will be looking to prove that they are the real deal.
The Giants have made one change to their side from last week, bringing in former captain Callan Ward for Tommy Sheridan.
For the Power, they have dropped Tom Rockliff and Riley Bonner after disappointing games last week and brought in Cam Sutcliffe and Ryan Burton.
