2024 Super Rugby round 4: Brumbies vs Highlanders preview

Following a shaky start for both the Brumbies and Highlanders, this weekend’s matchup should provide a real test for the men from the ACT.

After narrowly defeating an unlucky Western Force outfit last weekend in Canberra, the Brumbies will be looking to collect their first NZ scalp of the season with a win over the Highlanders in Dunedin on Saturday.

Determined to extend their winning streak, the Brumbies welcome back a few seasoned veterans to the fold, with Caderyn Neville returning to the starting side after he succumbed to a facial injury against the Chiefs. There has been some rotation in the forward pack which has seen Wallaby stalwart James Slipper return to the pine, whilst young guns Tom Hooper and Rob Valetini team up in the back row.

Head Coach Stephen Larkham has looked to remain positive about the encounter, naming an unchanged backline. The dynamic halves duo of skipper Ryan Lonergan and Noah Lolesio remains, with Tamati Tua and Len Ikitau partnering in the midfield. The ‘Lightning McQueen’ of rugby, Corey Toole, lines up on one wing with Andy Muirhead on the other wing. The elusive Tom Wright will look to inject himself from fullback once again.

The Highlanders are venturing home after breaking the hearts of all Waratahs fans last weekend and will be looking to do the same to the Brumbies faithful. With both teams currently at 2 wins and 1 loss, this contest is sure to capture the interest of rugby pundits.

Players to Watch

Brumbies – Corey Toole

Toole is an unbelievable rising talent that has taken the Super Rugby competition by storm. Using his blistering pace and electric feet, Toole is fast becoming a force to be reckoned with. After scoring four tries in three starts in 2024, his ability to leave a defender in his rear view mirror has become a trademark of his game. As they say, there is no substitution for speed!

Highlanders – Jacob Ratumaitavuki-Kneepkens

A newcomer to the Otago setup, Ratumaitavuki-Kneepkens has owned the 15 jersey this season. With his huge right boot and elusive footwork, he has the serious potential to be a game changer against the Brumbies. Expect to see plenty of involvement from him as he showcases his skill and athleticism this weekend.

Coverage of the match begins at 2pm Saturday, 16 March, on Stan Sport.

Score prediction: Brumbies 25 – 17 Highlanders
