Canberra United
Have announced the signing of four local players for the Westfield W-League 2018/19 season. Lauren Keir, Laura Hughes, Aoife Colvill and Maddy Whittall have been part of the squad during pre-season and round out coach Heather Garriock’s squad ahead of round one. Garriock praised the contribution of the youngsters through pre-season and said they have all earned their spot. “It is so important that we have talented, local players coming through into our Canberra United team and each of these girls brings something unique to the squad.”

UC Capitals
Have banked back-to-back road wins to start their 2018-19 WNBL campaign, taking down the Melbourne Boomers 72-65 at Geelong. Trailing by 17 points at half-time, Kelsey Griffin led the charge for the Caps with an incredible 23 points, 14 rebounds and five steals, and looked comfortable having recovered from a pre-season injury.

PM’s XI
Have announced an exciting line-up with filled with fringe Australian players for their upcoming match against South Africa at Manuka Oval on 31 October. Skippered by Tasmanian all-rounder George Bailey, former ACT Comet and current Western Australia left-arm pace bowler Jason Behrendorff has also been included in the 12-player squad. Current ACT/NSW Country Comet player Tom Engelbrecht was selected as the 12th man, continuing the long standing tradition of rising local players carrying the drinks.

Cameron Hill
Finished his rookie Carrera Cup season on Sunday 21 October with a mixed final round that saw him secure an overall standing of ninth place. Hill said the season was a steep learning curve for his privately-run family team. “It was a year where we jumped in the deep end, and learned how to swim really fast. It wasn’t just a learning experience for me, it was a big educational curve for the entire team,” Hill said.
Hockey
Earlier this month, Canberra’s Hockey community gathered as the Greatest Ever Strikers and Lakers teams were named. The evening celebrated past champions as the teams of 16 were named in front of Lakers, Strikers and ACT representative alumni. The ACT’s long history in producing quality hockey players was on full display with 20 of the 32 individuals named having been former or current national representatives.
Canberra Vikings
Have finished their 2018 campaign with a noble 35-28 loss in their away semi-final against Fiji Drua. After getting off to a flying start with four of the first five tries, the Vikings were run down in the second half in a match played in heavy rain. It was five tries all in the end, but extras off the boot – or a lack of them for Canberra – proved the difference.
Tennis
A world-class field will take part in the Apis Canberra International that will run from 27 October to 4 November at the Canberra Tennis Centre, Lyneham. Queenslander Jason Kubler and Japan’s Yoshihito Nishioka will headline the men’s draw, while defending women’s champion, Victorian Olivia Rogowska, and Brit Gabriella Taylor will feature in the women’s draw.
